The Newport Beach National Night Out event took place on Tuesday, August 5, attracting more than 700 local families to Bonita Canyon Sports Park. The gathering is a significant initiative aimed at enhancing police-community relationships and promoting neighborhood camaraderie.

National Night Out takes place annually across thousands of cities nationwide, focusing on crime prevention and community engagement. Attendees at the Newport Beach event had the opportunity to participate in a variety of interactive displays hosted by the Newport Beach Police Department, which included demonstrations from the CSI department, a showcase featuring a SWAT vehicle, and the K-9 team. Animal Control services and the Mounted Unit, with police officers on horseback, were also part of the event activities.

Residents were provided with valuable information on various topics such as crime prevention techniques, drug prevention strategies, home security tips, and child safety measures. Additionally, details about the Citizens’ Police Academy were shared with those in attendance. A special highlight was the appearance of McGruff the Crime Fighting Dog, who engaged with the crowd during the event.

In addition to public safety education, attendees enjoyed complimentary meals, provided by TK Burgers, which included burgers and chicken sandwiches for all those present. The event was also graced by the attendance of various local dignitaries, including Newport Beach Mayor Joe Stapleton, Councilmember Robyn Grant, and Orange County Supervisor Katrina Foley.

A volunteer table at the event was staffed by Susan Munthe and Pam Parker, who both graduated from the Citizens’ Police Academy. They provided attendees with information on enhancing home security measures, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in crime prevention.

Children had hands-on learning experiences at the 911 activity table, which was led by dispatch officer Chelsea Luitwieler. The table featured games and educational materials aimed at teaching children about emergency assistance and the critical role of police in the community.

The Newport Beach National Night Out is part of a broader initiative to strengthen the ties between neighbors and law enforcement. This event fosters community spirit and safety, ensuring that residents feel connected and engaged with their police force. By participating in such events, local families can contribute to creating a safer environment for everyone.
