News Summary

Laguna Beach has seen the revival of Wyland’s renowned mural, ‘Grey Whale and Calf,’ after nearly four decades. The newly restored piece now spans 160 feet, capturing the essence of marine life and the bond between mother whales and their calves. Supported by local investor Mo Honarkar, the restoration aims to preserve this cultural landmark while raising awareness about ocean conservation. Wyland’s commitment to marine art continues as he looks to enhance the mural with more underwater life, emphasizing the importance of environmental education.

Laguna Beach has witnessed the restoration of a significant piece of art, as celebrated marine-life artist Wyland has revitalized his original 200-foot mural titled “Grey Whale and Calf.” The completion of this restoration came nearly four decades after the mural’s initial dedication on July 9, 1981.

The newly restored mural, now stretching across 160 feet, depicts a mother grey whale swimming alongside her calf, symbolizing the bond between marine animals and their young. Wyland, who is set to turn 69 this month, has a long-standing relationship with the ocean and art, having begun his artistic journey at the age of four after being inspired by the ocean adventurer Jacques Cousteau.

The original mural was painted over in 1996 due to a disagreement with the operator of Hotel Laguna. Following this, Wyland created a smaller mural version made of tile in the 1990s, paying homage to his original vision. The recent restoration reflects not only Wyland’s commitment to marine life but also highlights his ongoing efforts to inspire awareness of ocean conservation.

The revival of the mural is supported by local real estate investor Mo Honarkar, who is currently working on revitalizing Hotel Laguna and aims to ensure the mural’s preservation as an integral part of the area’s cultural identity. In addition to restoring the existing mural, Wyland has plans to enhance it further by adding a reef and more marine life, which will draw upon his personal diving experiences.

Wyland’s original mural has been foundational, as it inspired a worldwide project that has resulted in the creation of 103 murals in various locations around the globe. These works serve as a canvas for promoting environmental education and appreciation for the marine ecosystem, emphasizing the importance of protecting ocean habitats.

In addition to his iconic murals, Wyland operates galleries in several locations, including Hawaii, Florida, Las Vegas, and Laguna Beach, where he often hosts private unveiling events. His impressive art collection has garnered a considerable following of approximately 100,000 collectors worldwide, spanning 120 countries. Notably, his clientele includes high-profile individuals such as actor Robert Redford and former basketball star Shaquille O’Neal.

The pricing of Wyland’s original artworks typically begins around $8,000, with notable pieces having sold for as high as $1.25 million. Wyland asserts that the economic climate has less impact on his high-end collectors, who continue to invest in his work regardless of broader economic changes.

Beyond his artistic contributions, Wyland has worked with over one million children across various regions to promote environmental education and foster a connection with marine life. Looking ahead, he aims to create 100 monumental sculptures of endangered animals in major cities as part of his ongoing commitment to conservation efforts, engaging the public in the conversation about protecting our planet’s wildlife.

The restoration of the “Grey Whale and Calf” mural not only revitalizes a significant artistic landmark but also reinforces Wyland’s message of ocean conservation and the importance of nurturing our relationship with the natural world.
