Newport Beach, California

Dr. William Moore Thompson IV, a 57-year-old infectious disease expert, faces serious allegations of sexual abuse from over 160 individuals who have filed 21 separate civil lawsuits against him in Orange County Superior Court. Accusations claim that Thompson exploited his position as a physician to sexually abuse patients, particularly targeting men living with HIV and AIDS during routine medical checkups.

The plaintiffs allege that Thompson conducted aggressive prostate examinations without gloves, fondled patients, and made inappropriate comments regarding their genitals. Disturbingly, reports have emerged that at times, Thompson displayed his own erect penis during these examinations, further exacerbating the traumatic experiences reported by the accusers. These serious allegations have resulted in Thompson facing criminal sexual assault charges, to which he has pleaded not guilty. His medical license has since been revoked, according to state records.

Thompson had medical staff privileges at Hoag Hospital from 2007 until late 2023 when he was arrested on suspicions relating to patient sexual abuse. Hoag Hospital officials have indicated that, during the time Thompson had clinical privileges, they were not aware of any complaints against him. However, the claims outlined in a consolidated master complaint allege that the hospital should have recognized Thompson’s alleged misconduct, which the plaintiffs describe as both blatant and overt.

Among the more shocking accusations is that Thompson engaged in sexual activities with Hoag nurses and housekeeping employees in staff locker rooms and bathrooms. Text messages reportedly show him making explicit remarks about his sexual encounters with nurses and a “housekeeping boy” within Hoag’s facilities. Morgan Stewart, an attorney representing the accusers, characterized Thompson’s conduct at Hoag as creating an environment reminiscent of a “frat house.”

Allegations against Dr. Thompson were initially brought to the attention of the Newport Beach Police Department and the California Medical Board more than a year prior to his arrest. Complaints had been reportedly lodged by various individuals to other physicians at Hoag about Thompson’s alleged misconduct before law enforcement intervened. However, a judge previously ruled that while accusations from over 100 accusers were brought forth, they were not directly linked to Hoag, leaving the possibility for amendment open.

As of now, no jury trial has been scheduled for either the civil or criminal cases against Thompson, leaving many of the involved parties waiting for a resolution amidst these unsettling allegations. The future implications of these cases may extend beyond just Dr. Thompson, as the conduct of Hoag Hospital under his tenure is also under scrutiny, with questions arising about the hospital’s oversight and response to complaints that could have potentially prevented this situation from escalating.

The ongoing legal proceedings serve as a chilling reminder of the responsibilities held by healthcare professionals and institutions to protect patients from abuse and misconduct. As details continue to emerge, both the civil lawsuits and the criminal charges will be monitored closely by the public and those within the medical community alike.
