Dr. William Moore Thompson IV, a 57-year-old infectious disease expert, faces serious allegations of sexual abuse from over 160 individuals who have filed 21 separate civil lawsuits against him in Orange County Superior Court. Accusations claim that Thompson exploited his position as a physician to sexually abuse patients, particularly targeting men living with HIV and AIDS during routine medical checkups.
The plaintiffs allege that Thompson conducted aggressive prostate examinations without gloves, fondled patients, and made inappropriate comments regarding their genitals. Disturbingly, reports have emerged that at times, Thompson displayed his own erect penis during these examinations, further exacerbating the traumatic experiences reported by the accusers. Among the more shocking accusations is that Thompson engaged in sexual activities with Hoag nurses and housekeeping employees in staff locker rooms and bathrooms. Text messages reportedly show him making explicit remarks about his sexual encounters with nurses and a “housekeeping boy” within Hoag’s facilities. Morgan Stewart, an attorney representing the accusers, characterized Thompson’s conduct at Hoag as creating an environment reminiscent of a “frat house.”
Allegations against Dr. Thompson were initially brought to the attention of the Newport Beach Police Department and the California Medical Board more than a year prior to his arrest. Complaints had been reportedly lodged by various individuals to other physicians at Hoag about Thompson’s alleged misconduct before law enforcement intervened. However, a judge previously ruled that while accusations from over 100 accusers were brought forth, they were not directly linked to Hoag, leaving the possibility for amendment open.
As of now, no jury trial has been scheduled for either the civil or criminal cases against Thompson, leaving many of the involved parties waiting for a resolution amidst these unsettling allegations.
