Lina is a widow and single mother to two children aged 11 and 9, who live in Mexico. During a chance meeting, Magaña and Roa discovered that Lina had not worked for an entire week due to her apprehension about being captured by ICE while selling snacks. In a candid conversation, Lina explained her distress, sharing how she had disposed of unsold items the previous day due to her fears of the raids. The couple, driven by their own immigrant backgrounds, felt compelled to assist Lina in her predicament.
Magaña took to TikTok to raise funds for Lina, quickly amassing over $300 in donations within just one day. Initially hesitant, Lina ultimately agreed to let Magaña and Roa operate her snack cart on her scheduled workday. The couple took charge of her cart, selling a variety of treats, including steamed sweet corn and raspados (shaved ice), from 2 PM to 7 PM. Roa reported that the experience was unexpectedly challenging, leading to a greater appreciation for the daily efforts of street vendors.
Santa Ana has seen a significant decline in street vendor presence due to the repercussions of recent ICE actions, resulting in many vendors opting to remain indoors out of fear.
