In San Clemente, California, emergency repairs are underway to enhance the coastal rail line following recent landslides that disrupted train service. Construction crews are working tirelessly to stabilize the tracks, with completion expected by early June. Approximately 4,200 tons of riprap have been placed for erosion control, and a new slope is being integrated to bolster the railway’s resilience. Passenger rail services remain suspended during the repairs, impacting commuters, while alternative transport options have been introduced.
Emergency repairs are currently in progress to strengthen the coastal rail line in San Clemente, California, following a series of landslides that have repeatedly compromised train service in recent years. Construction crews are working tirelessly, round the clock, seven days a week in an effort to stabilize the train tracks along the Orange County coastline.
The construction is projected to be completed by early June, enabling the return of passenger rail service shortly thereafter. This is crucial as the rail line has faced numerous closures due to bluff failures, impacting commuters and travelers alike.
As of late April, over 4,200 tons of riprap—large rocks used for erosion control—have been strategically placed alongside the tracks to reinforce and protect the shoreline. The focus is on critical sections of the rail corridor near Mariposa Point and North Beach, where erosion and landslides have posed significant threats to rail operations.
The ongoing repair efforts involve the careful sorting and placement of the riprap to reinforce areas where it has previously been effective. The scope of the project has been expanded following consultations with both the construction team and the California Coastal Commission, ensuring a comprehensive approach to improve the rail line’s resilience against coastal erosion.
A new 530-foot riprap slope has been integrated into the construction plans, although this addition is not expected to influence the overall timeline for reopening the rail line. Additionally, approximately 240,000 cubic yards of sand will be placed on the beach to help stabilize the slope and protect the tracks.
Some beach access points will be temporarily closed during the repair work, directing visitors to non-work zones. However, a pedestrian undercrossing located near Mariposa Point has already been reopened, allowing for safe passage in the area.
Furthermore, the Coastal Commission has approved a permit for the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) to construct a 1,400-foot wall on the inland side of a section of the track. This additional barrier aims to prevent future landslides, although a timeline for its construction has yet to be established. The California Transportation Commission has allocated $97 million for this wall project to ensure long-term stability.
Construction work is scheduled to continue daily from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m., minimizing disruption while enhancing safety measures along the rail line.
Passenger rail services through San Clemente, including Metrolink and Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner, are suspended during this emergency repair period. However, Metrolink will maintain daily service to Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo, without extending weekend services to San Juan Capistrano. Meanwhile, Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner is adjusting its service, providing bus connections between Irvine and Oceanside as an alternative for travelers.
The frequent closures along the coastal rail line are attributed to a combination of climate change and insufficient preventive measures against erosion, according to county officials. The situation was further exacerbated by a pedestrian bridge collapse in January 2024, highlighting the vulnerabilities of the infrastructure in the region.
