From July 11 to 13, audiences will enjoy a nostalgic journey through the vibrant rock n’ roll era of the 1980s, featuring classic hits from iconic bands. The production promises an unforgettable experience filled with high-energy performances. With its limited engagement, attendees are encouraged to secure tickets early to avoid disappointment.

Huntington Beach Prepares for Rock of Ages Musical

The Axis Theater will bring the classic jukebox musical Rock of Ages back to Huntington Beach for a limited run from July 11 to July 13. The performances will be held at Huntington Beach High School Theater, located at 1905 Main Street, Huntington Beach, CA 92648. This production marks one of the first times in years that Orange County audiences will have the opportunity to experience this iconic musical.

About the Production

Rock of Ages, set in 1987 on Hollywood’s famous Sunset Strip, tells the story of a small-town girl and a city boy navigating their way through a vibrant rock ‘n’ roll romance. The musical features a soundtrack of well-known hits from legendary bands such as Journey, Styx, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, and Bon Jovi, promising attendees an unforgettable musical experience filled with powerhouse vocals, big hair, and an entertaining atmosphere.

The Axis Theater production is helmed by the company’s founders and directors, Clara D’Autilia and Jeremy Cooley, along with choreographer Mackenzie Keck. Their vision aims to resonate with both long-time fans of 1980s rock music and new audiences discovering the genre.

Limited Engagement

This performance is framed as a must-attend event due to its limited availability, and the Axis Theater emphasizes the importance of securing tickets early to avoid disappointment. As part of a thriving arts scene in Orange County, the staging of Rock of Ages adds to a varied slate of local cultural events, including the recently concluded Pacific Symphony’s July 4 fireworks and upcoming festivities such as the Festival of Arts Fine Art Show in Laguna Beach next month.

Community and Cultural Highlights

In light of upcoming performances in the area, community organizations like the OneRoot Foundation continue supporting the arts. Recently, they provided a grant to South Coast Repertory following a withdrawal of funding from the National Endowment for the Arts. Meanwhile, the musical Real Women Have Curves, which previously ran on Broadway, will close on June 29 after receiving positive reviews but struggling with box office sales, grossing around $400,000 weekly.

This Broadway musical, directed by Sergio Trujillo, undertook various efforts to boost attendance, such as performing at the 78th Tony Awards. Although it garnered two Tony nominations, it ultimately did not win, with producers expressing pride in showcasing immigrant stories and the challenges surrounding the American Dream through its narrative based on Josefina López’s play.

Upcoming Events

Also in the Southern California region, the Pride concert, titled DANCING QUEENS, hosted by the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles, will take place on June 21 and 22 at the Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills. This concert will feature over 20 well-known songs from both Broadway and popular artists and includes notable guest artists such as Bruce Vilanch, a veteran of Broadway and renowned Emmy-winning writer.

The summer season promises a variety of theatrical offerings, with organizations like the Road Theatre Company and Center Theatre Group also set to present new works and performances this summer, enriching the local arts landscape further.

As Huntington Beach gears up for Rock of Ages, theater enthusiasts are encouraged to participate and enjoy this vibrant piece of cultural entertainment.
