Trash bins lined up at curbs in Orange County, reflecting service delays.
Residents across various cities in Orange County, including Anaheim, Brea, and Santa Ana, are experiencing significant delays in trash collection due to a strike by sanitation workers. The labor dispute, initiated on July 1, has left Republic Services struggling to maintain normal operations as workers demand better pay and benefits. Temporary drop-off locations have been set up to assist residents in managing accumulated waste, while efforts to restore service are ongoing. City officials are advising residents to keep trash bins available until serviced, as delays may persist throughout the weekend.
Orange County residents are currently facing significant delays in trash collection across multiple cities. Affected areas include Anaheim, Brea, Garden Grove, Fullerton, Huntington Beach, Santa Ana, Placentia, Seal Beach, and Yorba Linda. The delays stem from local workers of Republic Services honoring a strike initiated by East Coast sanitation workers.
The strike commenced on July 1, involving over 400 sanitation workers who walked off the job as part of their demand for improved benefits and pay from Republic Services. Teamsters Local 25 represents the workers and has been actively advocating for better working conditions. As the second-largest residential waste hauler in North America, Republic Services is now facing significant operational challenges due to this labor dispute.
In response to the ongoing delays, Republic Services has implemented temporary measures to assist residents in managing accumulated waste. Drop-off locations for bagged trash have been established in cities such as Garden Grove, Fullerton, and Huntington Beach. Residents are urged to check their respective city’s official website for specific drop-off locations and operating hours.
As service restoration may take several days, it is advised that residents continue leaving their trash containers at the curb until serviced. Republic Services began a plan to catch up on missed pickups on July 14, focusing on the areas most affected.
In Anaheim, Republic drivers are prioritizing missed pickups from July 9 to July 11 while working extended hours to expedite recovery efforts. Temporary drop-off sites have also been set up in the city to facilitate the disposal of bagged trash. Meanwhile, Santa Ana is utilizing over 30 Republic trucks and additional resources to help with trash collection recovery.
For Fullerton and Villa Park residents, it is anticipated that there may be a one- to two-day delay in trash pickups. City officials are advising the importance of keeping trash bins available for service while also adjusting enforcement of street sweeping violations during the delay period.
The situation remains fluid, with the union and Republic Services scheduled to meet with a federal mediator on July 15 in hopes of reaching a resolution and improving conditions. Delays in trash collection are expected to continue through the weekend across parts of Orange County as local union members express solidarity with the East Coast strike. Residents are urged to remain patient as the situation develops.
Only regular, bagged trash will be accepted at the temporary drop-off sites. Addresses and hours of operation for these sites have been provided by various cities to assist residents in effectively managing their trash.
As the delays persist, the cooperation of residents will be crucial in navigating this challenging situation. Continued updates and relevant information can be found through official city websites.
