Residents in Orange County are experiencing trash collection delays.
Residents in various cities across Orange County are facing delays in trash collection due to local Republic Services workers honoring a solidarity picket line linked to a strike by sanitation workers in Boston. The strike demands better wages and health benefits. Although there is no active strike in Orange County, local union members are supporting their colleagues. In response, temporary drop-off locations have been established for residents to dispose of trash until normal service resumes. Republic Services has not provided a timeline for restoring regular collection schedules.
Orange County, CA – Trash collection delays are currently affecting residents across several cities in Orange County, attributed to local Republic Services workers who are honoring a solidarity picket line related to a strike by over 400 sanitation workers at a facility in Boston. The strike is demanding improved wages and better health benefits for the workers involved.
Republic Services, the second-largest residential waste hauler in North America, provides waste collection services in Orange County cities such as Anaheim, Brea, Fullerton, Garden Grove, Huntington Beach, Placentia, Santa Ana, Seal Beach, Villa Park, and Yorba Linda. Although there is no active strike within Orange County, local union members of Teamsters Local 396 are part of the broader labor movement and are actively supporting their colleagues on the picket line.
As a result of these solidarity actions, some residents may experience delays in their scheduled trash collections. Republic Services has not released any information regarding when normal service levels will be restored. In response to the ongoing delays, many cities in Orange County have established temporary drop-off locations for residents to dispose of bagged trash. This initiative aims to address the backlog of waste accumulating in households.
Residents in Anaheim can utilize free trash drop-off services at the Anaheim Public Works Yard and the Republic Services CVT Disposal Center on designated days. The city of Brea has also set up roll-off bins for trash drop-off at various locations, including Brea Sports Park and Wildcatters Park, to help manage the waste efficiently.
The Garden Grove Sanitary District has opened a total of 12 temporary trash drop-off sites for residents, facilitating easier trash disposal during this challenging period. It is important to note that only regular bagged trash is accepted at these drop-off locations, and other types of waste, such as recyclables, hazardous materials, bulky items, or construction debris, are not permitted.
Residents are advised to keep their trash, recycling, and yard waste bins at the curb until they are emptied, as collection will resume when possible. Street sweeping services will continue as scheduled; however, no fines will be imposed for leaving bins out or for any parking violations connected to street sweeping during this time.
In addition to the ongoing situation, officials in Santa Ana have confirmed that trash and recycling pickups originally scheduled for July 9 have been postponed, with services expected to start again by Thursday or later. Republic Services is implementing an accelerated recovery schedule in Santa Ana, which may include working through the weekend to catch up on missed collections.
Residents in Seal Beach are also experiencing delays in trash collection, and they have been advised to leave their carts out until they can be serviced. There is ongoing media speculation that similar solidarity actions might occur at Republic Services locations in the Bay Area, indicative of a broader trend of labor negotiations across the country.
As delays in trash collection persist in Orange County, local residents are encouraged to take advantage of the available drop-off sites for waste disposal. While the situation is fluid, ongoing commitment from waste management professionals and local officials aims to minimize the impact of these labor actions on the community.
