Orange County – The congressional delegation of Orange County has submitted a request for over $190 million in federal funding aimed at enhancing local infrastructure and public safety for the year 2026. This funding initiative seeks to address various community needs such as road improvements, new fire station constructions, park enhancements, and increased public safety measures.

The funding requests from federal lawmakers are a yearly tradition, reflecting the expressed needs of cities, government agencies, and nonprofits. This year’s proposals come as local representatives aim to secure resources for a wide array of projects that benefit the community.

Among the local lawmakers, Representative Lou Correa, a Democrat from Santa Ana, requested the most funding, amounting to over $46 million. His request includes $7.5 million dedicated to developing an adaptive playground in Fullerton. In contrast, Representative Linda Sánchez requested the least for the county at just under $6.5 million, aimed at various local initiatives.

Infrastructure Improvements

A significant portion of the requests, totaling $62.8 million, focuses on infrastructure improvements. Projects include highway upgrades, bridge repairs, and the enhancement of traffic control signals to improve overall transportation efficiency. Notable requests include nearly $10 million from Representative Young Kim, a Republican from Anaheim Hills, earmarked for new road lanes on the 5 Freeway and Savi Ranch Parkway Road in Yorba Linda. Additionally, Representative Mike Levin has sought $2.5 million to realign and widen the La Novia Avenue bridge in San Juan Capistrano.

Public Safety Enhancements

Improving public safety is another key focus, with approximately $34.5 million designated for various initiatives. This includes the establishment of new real-time crime centers in municipalities such as Anaheim, Costa Mesa, and Orange. Alongside these efforts, Representative Derek Tran, a Democrat from Orange, has requested funding for a new emergency operations center in Los Alamitos, adding to the region’s safety resources.

Furthermore, requests for public safety include $8 million for modernizing the county’s specialty vehicle fleet and $2.5 million for renovations to the Orange County Sheriff’s Harbor Patrol facility, ensuring the sheriff’s department has the necessary tools and infrastructure for effective operations.

Recreational Facilities and Community Projects

In addition to infrastructure and safety projects, lawmakers have proposed $39 million for upgrades to recreational facilities, which encompasses parks, libraries, and public trails. Representative Levin has requested $10 million specifically for improvements to the Mariposa Walkway and Trail in San Clemente, enhancing outdoor spaces for community use.

Funding for $21 million has been requested for the construction and renovation of fire stations across various locations, including Newport Beach and Fullerton, with Representative Dave Min securing $2 million to address safety concerns at the structurally unsound South Laguna Beach fire station.

Water Quality and Homelessness Initiatives

On environmental concerns, lawmakers have allocated $14 million toward water quality treatments, prioritizing funding for PFAS treatment plants. In the context of housing and homelessness, both Min and Tran submitted requests for funding to address these issues. Min is seeking $1.5 million for a navigation center in Huntington Beach, while Tran has proposed $2 million for the Housing Finance Trust to support affordable housing developments.

Next Steps

As the proposal process unfolds, it is important to note that both the House and Senate must approve these funding requests by the October 1 deadline for the allocations to be activated. This initiative represents an ongoing commitment by Orange County representatives to secure critical federal funding to meet the diverse needs of their constituents and enhance community welfare.
