A spate of violence in Orange County has resulted in one death and several arrests, including a shooting near Newport Beach Pier and a fatal incident in Costa Mesa. The Newport Beach Police Department is investigating an altercation-turned-shooting where four individuals were arrested, while Costa Mesa police are looking into the tragic homicide of a 20-year-old woman. Both incidents have raised concerns over gun violence within the community.
Orange County – A series of violent incidents unfolded over the weekend in Orange County, leading to one fatality and multiple arrests. Four individuals, including a teenager, were taken into custody following a shooting near the Newport Beach Pier, while a separate shooting incident in Costa Mesa resulted in the death of a 20-year-old woman.
On Sunday evening at approximately 7:40 p.m., a shooting incident occurred at the intersection of Oceanfront and 23rd Street. According to the Newport Beach Police Department, the violence erupted from a physical altercation between two men in the street, ultimately escalating to gunfire. One man was struck in the foot but is expected to recover from his injuries.
Police agencies from Huntington Beach and Costa Mesa assisted in the investigation, successfully locating the suspects’ vehicle on the 55 Freeway at Fair Drive in Costa Mesa. During the arrests, a handgun was recovered, providing crucial evidence tied to the shooting incident.
Among those apprehended was 18-year-old David Pennington, who is facing charges of attempted murder. The identities of the other individuals involved, including a 17-year-old, have not been disclosed by the authorities. The ongoing investigation into this shooting is encouraging witnesses or individuals with information to come forward and assist law enforcement.
In a separate incident, a tragic shooting took place in Costa Mesa late Monday night. Police responded to reports of gunfire at around 11:10 p.m. in the 1500 block of Lukup Lane. Upon arrival, officers discovered a 20-year-old woman lying on the sidewalk, suffering from numerous gunshot wounds.
Medical personnel provided immediate assistance before transporting the victim to a local hospital; however, she succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival. The identity of the victim has not yet been released to the public. Authorities have confirmed that the victim was known to the suspect, who remains at large.
The Costa Mesa Police Department is actively investigating the homicide and has not released any details regarding the suspect’s description. Law enforcement is urging members of the community who may have witnessed the incident or possess relevant information to contact them and aid in their efforts to resolve this case.
These two separate incidents highlight ongoing concerns regarding gun violence in Orange County. Both investigations are currently underway as authorities work to ensure public safety and bring those responsible for these actions to justice.
