The altercation, which involved a victim and at least one of the suspects, escalated rapidly, resulting in gunfire that left the victim injured.
The shooting occurred around 7:40 p.m. at the intersection of West Oceanfront and 23rd Street. Initial reports indicate that what began as a verbal confrontation turned physical. During this struggle, one of the suspects brandished a handgun and fired approximately three shots at the victim, striking him in the foot. Emergency services responded swiftly, and the adult male victim was transported to a local hospital. Fortunately, his injuries were non-life-threatening, and he is expected to make a full recovery.
Law enforcement received multiple reports regarding the altercation almost immediately after it began. One of the suspects was detained at the scene, while the other suspects fled the area in a gray sedan. Responding officers launched an investigation into the incident and, with assistance from a Huntington Beach police helicopter, located the suspect’s vehicle near the 55 Freeway at Fair Drive in Costa Mesa.
The arrested suspects include David C. Pennington, 18, who faces charges of attempted murder. Additionally, Esaul Arriago and Saul E. Chavez, also both 18 years old, were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy and unlawful possession of a loaded firearm. The 17-year-old suspect’s identity has not been disclosed due to his minor status, but he too has been charged with conspiracy.
During the investigation, police recovered a handgun believed to have been used in the shooting, further contributing to the evidence against the suspects. Investigators are continuing to delve into the motivations behind the initial altercation. Witnesses have suggested that the victim may have been a bouncer or security guard at a nearby establishment, however, this information has not been confirmed by authorities.
