The Newport Beach Police Department is organizing a Mobile Cafe event to engage the community and strengthen ties with local residents. Scheduled for June 7 at the Newport Beach Public Library, this interactive gathering will feature police officers engaging in read-aloud sessions while also addressing community concerns. An additional Mobile Cafe is set for August 25 at Starbucks in Crystal Cove. Since launching in 2022, this initiative has significantly improved community relations, allowing residents to voice their concerns and connect with officers in a welcoming environment.
Newport Beach – The Newport Beach Police Department (NBPD) is set to host a special Mobile Cafe event on June 7, aimed at enhancing community engagement and fostering stronger relationships between residents and law enforcement. This interactive event encourages participation from the community, providing attendees with the opportunity to connect with police officers in a relaxed environment.
The Mobile Cafe – Books & Badges Storytime will take place at 10:30 a.m. at the Newport Beach Public Library, located at 1000 Avocado Avenue. During this event, NBPD officers will engage the attendees with entertaining read-aloud sessions and will be available to answer questions about their duties and experiences within the police force. Children will also have the chance to experience a behind-the-scenes look at the police department’s operations.
In addition to the June event, an extra Mobile Cafe is scheduled for August 25 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. This upcoming gathering will take place at Starbucks in the Crystal Cove Shopping Center, located at 21155 Newport Coast Drive, in partnership with the Irvine Company and Starbucks. This collaboration aims to create an inviting space for community members to speak with officers, voice concerns, and build familiarity with those serving their community.
The Mobile Cafe initiative provides a unique opportunity for one-on-one interactions between law enforcement and the public. These gatherings allow participants to inquire about local policing issues, including safety concerns and community initiatives, while enjoying coffee and donuts provided at various locations. Approximately 100 residents attended the most recent Mobile Cafe, which was held at the Java Cafe, highlighting growing community interest and participation.
Since its inception in July 2022, the Mobile Cafe series has proven to be a successful platform for enhancing community relations. The last event saw participation from 24 law enforcement representatives, including lieutenants, sergeants, and specialized officers from various divisions. Community concerns raised at the event included issues such as e-bikes, noise from car exhausts, and residential burglaries, demonstrating the ongoing dialogue between the police and residents.
The idea for the Mobile Cafe was introduced by Lieutenant Steven Oberon, who recognized the importance of community engagement in building trust and transparency with the public. Initially, Lieutenant Brad Miller expressed skepticism about the program; however, he has observed high levels of participation and positive feedback from officers. As a result, the overall response from the community has exceeded expectations, marking the Mobile Cafe events as a notable success in fostering relationships between the police department and local residents.
In addition to the scheduled events, the NBPD will continue offering community interactions in various locations, including past gatherings at Newport Pier. The Mobile Cafe events reiterate the department’s commitment to making police services more accessible and approachable, while also providing valuable insights into the challenges and achievements of police work.
Community engagement remains a crucial aspect of the Newport Beach Police Department’s mission. These efforts aim to create a supportive environment where residents feel comfortable engaging with their local law enforcement, thereby strengthening community ties and improving safety throughout the area.
