Newport Beach playground designed for accessibility with colorful play equipment.

News Summary

Newport Beach recently inaugurated its inaugural accessible playground in San Miguel Park, marking a significant milestone for inclusivity. Inspired by the advocacy of a local resident, this $900,000 playground features innovative equipment like a long tube slide and a reimagined see-saw, designed to cater to children of all abilities. The project emphasizes community spirit and dedication to creating safe play areas for children with disabilities, offering a transformative experience for families.

Newport Beach Celebrates Inaugural Accessible Playground!

In a heartwarming event, Newport Beach recently celebrated the dedication of its very first playground designed specifically with accessibility in mind. This groundbreaking project was inspired by a young resident who spoke passionately on behalf of her sister, who faces challenges due to her disabilities. It has been a six-year journey, and the fruits of that labor have finally come to life in San Miguel Park, transforming playtime for everyone.

A $900,000 Transformation

The playground underwent a substantial $900,000 renovation, making it a shiny new play area sprawled across 5,500 square feet that oozes inclusivity. No longer will children with disabilities have to watch from the sidelines as others have fun! The centerpiece of this new playground is an impressive long tube slide that is truly a game-changer. Kids can now access it via a spiraling belt of suspended play mats, which allows those with mobility issues to reach it without the need for daunting stairs or ladders.

Rethinking Traditional Play Equipment

The playground is also home to a reimagined wee-saw, a modern take on the classic see-saw. This nifty piece of equipment features seats designed with back support, ensuring that children can enjoy the ride safely and comfortably. This unique attraction has already been highlighted as a favorite by Alanis Portillo, the very girl who inspired the playground’s creation. For Alanis, traditional playground equipment has been a challenge as she has grown older, and her family has often worried about her safety while playing.

Advocacy That Made a Difference

A big part of what made this playground a reality is due to the determination of Alexis Portillo, Alanis’s sister. Witnessing her sister’s struggles at playgrounds left a profound impact on Alexis, who felt devastated to see Alanis often on the sidelines while other children enjoyed themselves. It was during her sixth-grade year that Alexis took it upon herself to advocate for change. She approached local civic leaders to propose installing an ADA-accessible swing at Coastal Peak Park, which turned into a broader initiative that led to swings being installed in four parks throughout Newport Beach.

City Leaders Taking Note

The results of Alexis’s early advocacy were instrumental in paving the way for the renovation at San Miguel Park. Former Newport Beach Mayor Will O’Neill recognized just how important Alexis’s efforts were in highlighting the community’s need for more inclusive play facilities, paving the way for future projects.

A Space for All

At the dedication event, Mayor Joe Stapleton shared his vision for the renovated playground, stating it is designed as a space where children of all abilities can come together and grow. The inaugural day saw various members of the City Council joining in on the fun, testing out the equipment alongside Alanis and her family.

A Blessing for Families

Perla Portillo, Alanis’s mother, expressed her gratitude during the event, noting how rare inclusive parks are in Orange County. The new playground has been described as a true blessing for families with children who have disabilities, offering a sense of camaraderie and joy.

Next Steps for Newport Beach

This renovation of San Miguel Park was initially approved by the Newport Beach City Council during an October 8 meeting, with plans for construction expected to kick off next summer. The project, awarded to R.E. Schultz Construction, Inc., was the lowest bidder chosen among five firms, promising quality and efficiency as the city moves forward to bring more joy to its public spaces.

For the Newport Beach community, this playground marks a significant step towards building an inclusive environment where every child can enjoy the simple pleasure of play!
