News Summary

Management consulting firms in Orange County are facing a challenging environment, reporting an 8% decline in consultants for the second consecutive year. This ongoing trend indicates economic challenges, with major firms such as Deloitte and Accenture experiencing notable reductions. Smaller firms like RSM US LLP see dramatic drops as well, while a few, like Talley LLP, manage to grow. The overall picture reflects structural shifts in the industry as firms adapt to changing market conditions and regulations.

Orange County, CA – For the second consecutive year, management consulting firms in Orange County have reported a significant decline in the number of management consultants, with an overall 8% drop compared to figures from May 2024. This reduction follows a 1% decrease in consultants the previous year, indicating ongoing challenges for the sector.

Nine out of the top twenty consulting firms in the region experienced a decrease in their local consultant numbers, highlighting a growing trend within the industry. Deloitte, the highest-ranked management consulting firm in Orange County, saw its consultant count fall from 361 last year to 340 this year, a reduction of approximately 5.8%. Despite this decline, Deloitte maintains a robust employee count of 1,032, though this figure represents a 4.5% decrease from May 2024.

Accenture, headquartered in Chicago, reported a similar trend, with their consultant numbers in Irvine declining from 347 to 312. Overall, Accenture has experienced the largest drop in total employee count among the major consulting firms, falling from 390 to 351, a decrease of about 10%. PwC, which dropped from third to fifth in the rankings, faced a significant 19% reduction in consultants, from 166 to 135, although their total employee count increased 3.7% to 530.

KPMG managed to keep its consultant numbers steady at 163, remaining the third-ranked firm this year, while its overall employee count grew by over 2% to 474. Meanwhile, Ernst & Young LLP reported an unusual increase in their consultant count, rising from 151 to 157, positioning them fourth overall in the rankings. Ernst & Young’s total employee count also climbed by 5.5% to 668.

The decline extends to several smaller firms as well. RSM US LLP experienced the most dramatic drop, with a staggering 27% reduction in consultants, bringing their total from 103 to 75. This was accompanied by an 11% decrease in total employees, falling to 242. Similarly, Slalom faced a 13% decrease in consultants, reducing their numbers from 119 to 104, while Profit Recovery Partners noted a decline of 9.8%, dropping from 122 to 110 consultants.

Despite the downturn for many, Talley LLP has bucked the trend by increasing its consultant count by 15%, climbing to 23 consultants. Conversely, Blythe Global Advisors LLC reported a modest decline of 4% to 120 consultants amid decreasing demand and shifts within the industry. Additionally, significant changes are taking place in the consulting landscape, exemplified by Moss Adams merging with Baker Tilly, which reflects the structural adjustments within the industry.

The declines in consultant numbers can be attributed to factors such as changes in economic conditions, fewer initial public offerings (IPOs), and recent alterations in accounting regulations, which have collectively impacted overall demand for consulting services. As firms grapple with these challenges, the overall picture portrays a difficult environment for management consulting in Orange County, with varying outcomes reported across different companies.

In conclusion, while some firms manage to adapt and grow amidst the ongoing declines in consultant numbers, the overall trend indicates a challenging time for management consulting firms in Orange County. With external pressures reshaping the industry landscape, the firms will need to innovate and reposition themselves to navigate the complexities ahead.
