Corona del Mar – Gallery Sonder is currently showcasing a solo exhibition titled ‘Lensing Water’ featuring works by Los Angeles-based artist Lachlan Turczan. The exhibition run is set to remain open until September 14. This exhibition marks a highlight for the gallery, which opened its doors in November of the previous year under the direction of Josh MacDonald, a longtime figure in the art industry.

MacDonald, who has nearly 20 years of experience in the art world, started his career collaborating with local sculptor Richard MacDonald, his uncle. In establishing Gallery Sonder, he aimed to create a welcoming space for art lovers and the community. The support from locals has solidified the gallery’s presence in Corona del Mar.

The ‘Lensing Water’ exhibition is curated by Genevieve Williams and encompasses various multimedia elements, incorporating water, light, and sound. This work reflects the innovative spirit of the California light and space movement, engaging viewers through both visual and sensory experiences. Turczan’s artistry focuses on the properties of water, employing optical and sonic techniques to deepen the exploration of this element.

Turczan’s ‘Lensing Water’ comprises five distinct bodies of work. Notable pieces include the ‘Contact Lens’ vessels, archival ‘Watergram’ prints, and ‘Annular Optic’ wall art. Further adding to the exhibition’s interactivity, the ‘Sympathetic Resonance’ features polished stainless steel water barrels that manipulate the water within them, inviting engagement from viewers. Another prominent work, ‘Liquid Lens’, utilizes clear acrylic to form an infinite ring around a water barrel, altering its appearance when touched. Additionally, the ‘Light Object’ employs lasers and clear acrylic, creating dynamic visuals that shift with the viewer’s perspective.

The ‘Watergram’ prints in particular utilize darkroom photo lab techniques, capturing images of water in motion, thus emphasizing the interplay between the physical element and artistry. Turczan’s innovative approach has earned him accolades, including being named a finalist for the prestigious Lumen Prize Hybrid Award for innovations in art and technology.

To commemorate the exhibition’s conclusion, Turczan will hold an Artist Talk on September 14 at 5 p.m. at Gallery Sonder. This event provides an opportunity for attendees to gain deeper insight into his artistic process and the themes presented in his work.

Genevieve Williams is not only the curator of this exhibition but is also recognized for her contributions to art, having been selected to receive the Orange County Arts’ Emerging Art Leader award at the Segerstrom Center for Arts in Costa Mesa later this month. She has previously directed the Peter Blake Gallery and has curated more than 100 exhibitions over the past decade, highlighting her dedication to artistic excellence and community engagement.

MacDonald has expressed his validation with the recognition received by Turczan and Williams, affirming his vision for Gallery Sonder to showcase boundary-pushing artists. The installation is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday, located at 3435 East Coast Hwy., Corona del Mar.
