Los Angeles

Lake Street Dive has released their eighth studio album titled “Good Together,” promoting a theme of positivity in a time of widespread division. The album, described as a celebration of “joyful rebellion,” emerges from a desire to write music that uplifts rather than brings the listener down.

The founding member, Rachael Price, revealed that the concept for the album came to life during a songwriter’s retreat at the home of drummer Mike Calabrese in Vermont in early 2023. The band members made a conscious decision to steer away from sad or negative musical themes. Instead, they sought to infuse their songs with positive and joyful subjects, though they were careful to keep the music from becoming overly simplistic or sugary.

Tracks like “Help Is On the Way” and “Twenty-Five” serve as examples of this new approach, highlighting relationships in which individuals learn to overcome past struggles and develop healthier habits together. The new direction in songwriting is marked by a collaborative effort, with all band members working closely together in one room for the first time during the early stages of the songwriting process. This method fostered a deeper sense of trust and creativity among the group.

The album features a diverse range of musical styles. For instance, “Seats At the Bar” carries a tropicalia vibe, while “Dance With a Stranger” draws inspiration from the synth sounds of the 1980s. Additionally, the track “Twenty-Five” stands out as a heartfelt piano ballad reflecting on a romantic relationship that did not work out as hoped.

Lake Street Dive is preparing for a tour to promote “Good Together,” with upcoming performances scheduled at the Troubadour in West Hollywood on June 25 and Great Park Live in Irvine on June 27. Concertgoers can expect a full horn section and a percussionist to join the band during these shows, promising an extravagant live performance.

The production of “Good Together” was supported by renowned producer Mike Elizondo, known for his collaborations with artists such as Dr. Dre and Fiona Apple. Elizondo’s influence helped shape the overall sound and direction of the album. Price noted the unique experience of recording while integrating her newborn daughter into her life after taking maternity leave, adding a personal touch to the creation process.

Lake Street Dive first formed in Boston in 2004 and gained significant attention following a viral performance on YouTube in 2012. Their third album, “Bad Self Portraits,” released in 2014, played a pivotal role in solidifying their success within the music industry. The band has continued to grow their audience and is slated to headline at Madison Square Garden in September.

Throughout the creative process for “Good Together,” the band was inspired by valuable advice from Mike Calabrese’s father, who emphasized the importance of enjoying the moment without overthinking. This idea resonates with the album’s overarching message of positivity and connection, making it a noteworthy release amid challenging times.
