The city of Irvine has proposed a gondola transit system to improve transportation over the Great Park. While backed by significant funding from Swyft Cities, the project faces scrutiny over transparency and the management of public funds. Local officials, including Councilmember Kathleen Treseder, have expressed reservations about the project’s rapid advancement without proper disclosure. Discussions regarding the project’s funding and contracts are expected in an upcoming public meeting, as concerns continue to mount among residents and stakeholders.
The city of Irvine has unveiled a proposed gondola transit system aimed at providing residents with a quick way to bypass traffic over the Great Park. This ambitious project, which promises to become a key feature of local public transit options, is backed by Swyft Cities, a startup that has pledged to contribute services and equipment valued up to $10 million in the project’s first year.
However, the initiative has raised significant concerns regarding funding transparency, as taxpayers have already invested approximately $700,000 in the project without adequate public disclosure. Contracts linked to the gondola proposal have been signed outside the established procedural pathways and remain largely hidden from public view, leading to skepticism from various stakeholders.
Irvine Councilmember Kathleen Treseder has voiced strong reservations about the rapid advancement of the gondola project, indicating her desire to pause further development until a thorough review can be conducted. Her apprehension stems from discovering information about a $200,000 gondola contract during a recent meeting, which she states was the first time she had been made aware of such an agreement.
The city’s lack of transparency is further highlighted by the absence of discussions regarding four additional contracts associated with the gondola project, which total around $550,000. As the city manager, Oliver Chi, has not commented on these funding issues, concerns continue to mount among the public and officials regarding the project’s legitimacy and transparency.
The gondola transit system is intended to connect various recreational and entertainment facilities nestled within the Great Park, a sprawling 1,300-acre area envisioned by city officials to rival New York City’s Central Park. Over the years, there have been numerous public transit proposals, including trams and light rail, but previous efforts faced hurdles related to the park’s complex infrastructure.
Following the hiring of Swyft Cities, the planning focus shifted towards a gondola system. The project gained momentum during discussions held by the Great Park Board in April, and a model of the gondola was publicly showcased in a subsequent event two weeks later.
Swyft Cities has positioned the gondola as a mass transit solution for the Great Park, with the pilot program featuring eight gondolas intended to facilitate easier access between the park’s visitor center and retail facilities. If successfully implemented, the gondola system would represent a novel approach to public transportation in the United States, being inspired by a concept previously considered by Google.
The gondola project is expected to be revisited in an upcoming public meeting, where city officials plan to clarify spending and the overall trajectory of the initiative. Stakeholders await further dialogue on the project’s funding, its potential for widespread use, and continued community engagement to address the growing concerns regarding its transparency and operational viability.
