Irvine – The Irvine City Council has appointed Assistant City Manager Sean Crumby as the interim City Manager, effective July 7, following the departure of Oliver Chi, who has been named the City Manager for Santa Monica. Crumby’s appointment comes at a pivotal time for the city, as he steps into the role that Chi has filled since December 2021.
Oliver Chi, who has been instrumental in Irvine’s development, will conclude his tenure on July 6, just a day before Crumby officially takes over. Chi’s departure to Santa Monica is seen as a move to strengthen their leadership structure, where he will manage a city budget of $789.9 million and oversee more than 2,000 employees.
In taking on his new responsibilities, Crumby brings with him nearly three decades of executive leadership experience in municipal governance. He has previously held significant roles, including Director of Public Works in Huntington Beach, Assistant City Manager, and Public Works Director for Seal Beach. In addition, Crumby has served in a variety of leadership positions in Long Beach.
During his tenure as Assistant City Manager for Irvine, Crumby has been at the forefront of important city initiatives, overseeing various projects related to public works, transportation, and sustainability operations. One of the most notable projects he has been managing is the $1 billion Great Park construction, which has been pivotal for the community. However, he has faced criticism concerning community outreach and feedback related to proposals for an aerial transit system over the Great Park.
