Supporters rally for immigration reform in the wake of Barranco's arrest.
Narciso Barranco, a landscaper and father of three active-duty U.S. Marines, is set to be released on bond after a violent ICE arrest in June. His case has sparked public outrage and calls for immigration reform, as supporters emphasize the importance of civil rights. Barranco’s future hearings will address his immigration status amidst community backing and legal efforts to prevent deportation.
Tustin, California — Narciso Barranco, a 48-year-old landscaper and father of three active-duty U.S. Marines, is set to be released on bond from the Adelanto U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) processing center on Friday afternoon, July 11. His release comes following a violent arrest in late June that has drawn significant public outrage and concern regarding immigration enforcement practices.
During a bond hearing, attended by supporters including local councilmembers and a bishop from the Diocese of Orange, Barranco’s case was highlighted as a battle for civil rights and due process. His release is conditional, allowing him to remain free until mid-August, when he will attend another hearing to seek a change in his immigration status to parole-in-place, a process available due to his wife’s U.S. citizenship and his children’s military service.
Barranco’s arrest occurred while he was working outside an IHOP, where he was confronted by federal immigration agents. A video of the incident depicted Barranco being pinned to the ground and punched, leading to widespread condemnation. U.S. Customs and Border Protection accused Barranco of assaulting agents with a weed whacker and resisting arrest; however, the video’s evidence suggests he was merely swinging the tool without hitting anyone.
In the video, which surfaced following the confrontation, Barranco can be seen in a violent struggle with federal agents, which provoked a public outcry over the treatment of undocumented individuals in the U.S. After the incident, family members reported that Barranco appeared to be in poor condition while in custody, wearing the same clothes from the day of his arrest and expressing discomfort when contacted by family.
The bond hearing for Barranco saw a strong turnout of supporters who expressed solidarity for his situation. Councilmember Arianna Barrios emphasized the importance of Barranco’s case as part of a larger fight for civil rights and humanitarian principles. His release has been met with relief from family members, particularly his son Alejandro, who shared that Barranco has been a resident of Orange County since the 1990s and has worked diligently as a landscaper while seeking parole-in-place to legally stay in the country.
The Barranco family is actively pursuing legal representation to support Narciso’s case and prevent his deportation. In addition to hiring legal help, the family has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to aid in covering legal expenses related to his immigration status adjustment and defense.
Concerns about immigration policies and enforcement tactics have been revived by Barranco’s arrest, prompting local officials, including Congressman Lou Correa, to call for comprehensive immigration reform. Correa criticized ICE’s actions and emphasized the need for legislation that protects long-standing residents like Barranco, who have familial ties to U.S. citizens.
The incident has ignited discussions across the nation regarding the conduct of immigration enforcement agents and the treatment of undocumented immigrants, particularly those with family or military connections. The ongoing situation highlights the complexities of immigration law and the wider social and political debates surrounding it.
As Barranco looks forward to his release and the possibility of adjusting his immigration status, his case continues to resonate with many who advocate for fair treatment under U.S. immigration laws. As the mid-August hearing approaches, the Barranco family and their supporters remain hopeful for a favorable outcome.
