On June 21, a paddle out at Huntington Beach Pier honored Brian Wilson, co-founder of The Beach Boys, who recently passed away. This tribute coincided with International Surfing Day and attracted around 150 surfers and nearly 400 attendees. The event celebrated Wilson’s impact on beach culture and music with classic Beach Boys hits, enhancing the communal spirit. Attendees remembered both his contributions and personal struggles, reflecting a deep connection between his music and the surfing lifestyle, marking a heartfelt tribute to the iconic musician.
A paddle out was held on June 21 at Huntington Beach Pier to honor Brian Wilson, co-founder of The Beach Boys, who passed away on June 11 at the age of 82. The event coincided with International Surfing Day, bringing together surfers and fans from near and far to pay tribute to the iconic musician.
Approximately 150 surfers participated in the paddle out, forming a circle in the ocean with flowers in hand as they paid their respects to Wilson. On the sand and pier, nearly 400 attendees, including fans, community members, and civic leaders, gathered to celebrate the legacy of the musician who significantly shaped Southern California beach culture through his music.
Organized by Visit Huntington Beach, the event saw Kelly Miller, the organization’s president and CEO, reflect on the impact that Beach Boys music had on his childhood. The paddle out featured classic Beach Boys songs played over audio speakers, including favorites such as “Good Vibrations,” enhancing the celebratory atmosphere of the occasion.
The paddle out was led by Duke Aipa, who initiated the ceremony with the ceremonial blowing of a conch shell. Surfers honored Wilson by paddling out into the ocean and later returning to shore, having formed a symbolic circle in the water. Attendees were encouraged to bring beach chairs or surfboards, creating an inclusive environment as they all came together to remember Wilson.
Among the guests at the event was Dean Torrence from Jan and Dean, who shared anecdotes about working alongside Wilson. Wilson co-wrote “Surf City” with Jan and Dean, a song that played a pivotal role in cementing Huntington Beach’s reputation as Surf City U.S.A., a title trademarked in 1994.
The event served as both a memorial for Wilson and a celebration of surf culture, marking the start of summer. Huntington Beach resident Greg Carcerano conveyed the deep connection that Beach Boys music has to the surf culture he experienced growing up, highlighting how the melodies and lyrics have become intertwined with the lifestyle of the area.
While honoring the contributions Wilson made to music, some participants reflected on his personal struggles, particularly with mental health, and the portrayal of his life in the biopic “Love & Mercy.” Wilson had been diagnosed with dementia and was under conservatorship since 2024. This aspect of his life added a layer of poignancy to the tribute, as attendees acknowledged both his achievements and the challenges he faced.
As the paddle out concluded, the atmosphere was filled with a sense of gratitude and remembrance for Wilson’s impact on music and culture. The event showcased the enduring legacy of The Beach Boys and served as a reminder of the joy and happiness that Wilson brought to countless fans through his music.
