Laguna Beach, CA – Local residents are invited to participate in a livestream event titled “Ask the Doc” on Friday, July 11, at noon, where Dr. Crystal Glover, an expert in aging at UC Irvine, will discuss topics related to healthy aging and Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Glover oversees the Outreach, Recruitment, and Engagement Core at the Institute for Memory Impairments and Neurological Disorders at UC Irvine and has played a significant role in developing educational and diagnostic tools aimed at enhancing cognitive health for older adults.

Participants can access the stream through youtube.com/@UCIMIND/streams or on Facebook. This online event is designed to provide valuable insights and answer questions about cognitive health in the aging population.

In addition to Dr. Glover’s session, another informative event is scheduled for May 12, where Claudia Kawas, a geriatric neurologist and professor at UC Irvine, will present findings from The 90+ Study. This extensive research project examines cognitive health among over 2,000 residents aged 90 and older in Laguna Woods. Dr. Kawas will explore the intriguing biological mysteries of aging, including how some of the oldest individuals manage to retain cognitive function despite the presence of Alzheimer’s pathology in their brains. This presentation will take place at the Susi Q community center from 2 to 3:30 p.m., and general attendance is free, with registration available through thesusiq.org.

Furthermore, a free panel discussion titled “Till Stress Do Us Part” is set for May 19, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at Susi Q. This discussion will focus on how couples can maintain their relationships during challenging times, featuring expert panelists.

The Susi Q serves as a vital resource in the community, offering a variety of programs aimed at lifelong learning and senior support. Residents can take advantage of activities such as yoga, book clubs, and complimentary consultations provided by the Dorene Butler Care Management Department. The center is conveniently located at 380 Third Street in downtown Laguna Beach and offers free underground parking for visitors.

In the realm of research, a recent study published in the journal Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience has shed light on age-related changes in exploratory behavior and their potential impact on spatial navigation abilities. The study compared younger individuals with middle-aged participants regarding their performance in navigating a virtual maze. Findings indicated that middle-aged participants traveled shorter distances and engaged in less exploration than their younger counterparts.

Researchers propose that engaging older adults in navigational exercises could assist in maintaining cognitive functions and may serve as important clinical markers for Alzheimer’s disease. The study’s authors emphasize the significance of exploring behaviors as potential indicators for diagnosing risks associated with Alzheimer’s and related conditions.

As the community engages with these events and emerging studies, the efforts made by professionals in the fields of aging and geriatric health continue to provide critical insights into the challenges and mysteries surrounding aging and cognitive health.
