Dana Point's new trolley service enhances summer connectivity.
Dana Point, California, has initiated a free summer trolley service aimed at improving transportation for residents and visitors. This service, part of a collaboration with six Orange County cities, connects popular coastal areas and has already proven effective with over 80,000 passengers last summer. Enhanced service for 2025 includes new trolley stops and a real-time tracking app. The trolley not only eases traffic but also serves various communities and activities, making it a valuable addition to Dana Point’s summer experience.
Dana Point, California, has unveiled a complimentary summer trolley service for 2025, aiming to enhance connectivity and convenience for residents and visitors alike. This initiative, part of a collaborative effort among six Orange County cities, is designed to shuttle individuals around popular coastal areas without the need for a personal vehicle.
Last summer, Dana Point’s trolley service was relied upon by over 80,000 passengers and connects seamlessly with trolley routes in four neighboring cities: Laguna Beach, Laguna Niguel, Newport Beach, and San Clemente. This network provides an efficient transportation solution across South Orange County’s coastal towns, allowing easy access to various attractions and reducing the need for driving to busy locations.
The addition of trolley services is expected to alleviate traffic and parking congestion in Dana Point, ultimately creating a more enjoyable environment for tourists and local residents. Increased user traffic signifies the trolley’s dual benefit of serving both visitors and local communities effectively. Riders of all backgrounds utilize this service, including international tourists like Lena Karlsmyr from Sweden and local students heading to inviting beach spots.
High school students also frequently rely on the trolley, transporting surfboards to popular locations such as Salt Creek Beach. Many riders, including local resident Flor Reyes, appreciate the stress-free exploration of the area that the trolley facilitates, thanks to its open and sociable atmosphere. Hazel Aguilar, one of the new trolley drivers, relishes the opportunity to interact with regular commuters while providing a pleasant travel atmosphere.
For the upcoming summer season, Dana Point has introduced four new trolley stops, expanding service and improving access to additional neighborhoods, particularly near Sunset Park. This expansion aims to cater to growing community needs and enhance the overall rider experience.
To further this objective, the city has launched a new app named Passio Go, allowing users to track trolley locations in real time. This feature aims to improve rider convenience and reduce wait times, making the service more user-friendly and efficient.
The trolley services are primarily funded by the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA), which supports local transportation initiatives through grants. Last year, the OCTA recorded over 400,000 boardings across all summer trolley routes, reflecting the high demand for this sustainable transportation alternative.
Local officials, such as Laguna Beach Councilmember Mark Orgill, have noted the positive impact of trolleys in managing visitor traffic and fostering environmental sustainability. In line with this goal, Dana Point is exploring the possibility of incorporating an electric vehicle fleet for future trolley and bus services.
The trolleys operate with a frequency of every 15 to 20 minutes and continue their service on holidays like Labor Day, also providing special event routes for concerts, movie screenings, and more. The overall feedback from riders indicates that most trolley experiences are enjoyable, contributing significantly to the summer experience for everyone involved.
As the summer approaches, the trolley service is poised to play a pivotal role in Dana Point’s community dynamics, enabling individuals to connect with their surroundings and each other in a hassle-free manner.
