Costa Mesa – Mayor John Stephens addressed a gathering of approximately 300 attendees at the annual State of the City luncheon held at the Hilton Orange County/Costa Mesa. The event, organized by the Costa Mesa Chamber of Commerce, centered around the theme “Costa Mesa Cares,” which focused on the essential contributions of nonprofit organizations in the local community.
During his address, Stephens highlighted the significant role that nonprofits play in promoting the city’s core values of inclusion, compassion, and collaboration. He pointed out that City Hall is not always the first choice for individuals seeking assistance, thereby emphasizing the importance of local organizations that stand ready to support residents in various ways.
The mayor presented a slideshow during the event that showcased numerous local nonprofit organizations and their valuable contributions. Among the highlighted organizations were Someone Cares Soup Kitchen, which addresses food insecurity, and Share Ourselves, which offers medical treatment to those in need. The presentation also featured lyrics from the well-known song “Lean on Me,” leading attendees to participate in a sing-along while viewing images representing the work of nonprofits.
After the presentation, a panel discussion was held featuring three recognized local charitable leaders. Bill Bracken, founder of Bracken’s Kitchen; Mary Cappellini, executive director of Save Our Youth (SOY); and Jennifer Friend, CEO of Project Hope Alliance, shared insights about their organizations’ missions, origins, and collaborative efforts with the city of Costa Mesa.
Stephens noted that Costa Mesa is home to a wide variety of nonprofits, emphasizing the impossibility of mentioning each one individually due to their extensive numbers. He reiterated the importance of the partnerships formed between the city government and nonprofit organizations in delivering essential services to the community. The services rendered by these organizations are vital, addressing the needs of citizens through programs such as those offered at the Costa Mesa bridge shelter, and initiatives geared towards assisting seniors, youth, and other residents requiring support.
The message conveyed during the luncheon centered around the theme of community support and collaboration, especially in the face of ongoing economic and political uncertainties. Mayor Stephens’ remarks and the supporting presentations served to reaffirm the crucial roles that nonprofits play in enhancing the quality of life in Costa Mesa.
The event also served as a reminder of the strength found in community partnerships and the collective impact that various organizations can make when they work together in concert with local government. As Costa Mesa continues to foster a culture of support and inclusivity, the integral role of nonprofit organizations cannot be overstated, serving as lifelines for many residents navigating challenges in their daily lives.
