Costa Mesa will host the much-anticipated annual Fish Fry, organized by the Newport-Harbor Lions Club, from June 27 to June 29, 2024. This community event will take place at Lions Park, located at 570 18th St., attracting families and locals for a summer celebration.

The Fish Fry will be open during the following hours: Friday from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Admission is free, allowing guests to enjoy the festivities without an entry fee. However, food, beverages, and tickets for carnival rides will be available for purchase.

Attendees can indulge in a delicious meal priced at $15 per plate, which includes two pieces of fried Alaskan cod filets, along with fries and coleslaw sourced from Newport Rib Co. The Lions Club has prepared for the event by securing 1,100 pounds of Alaskan cod filets, 42 cases of fries, and an ample supply of coleslaw.

In addition to the food, the Fish Fry features various activities, including carnival games and rides suitable for all ages. There will also be opportunities to sample a variety of other food offerings, such as hot dogs, hamburgers, brats, funnel cakes, and selections from a Mexican food truck. Live music will set the ambiance for the event, and a beer and wine garden will be available for adult guests.

The origin of the Fish Fry traces back to a community initiative in 1946, initially aimed at raising funds for the construction of a new baseball field in Lions Park. Over the decades, the event has transformed into a beloved tradition, once featuring a parade and drawing crowds of up to 100,000 attendees. In recent years, the event was relocated from Fairview Park to Lions Park due to environmental concerns. The park has since undergone renovations to better accommodate the festivities.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Fish Fry, highlighting its significance within the Costa Mesa community. Notably, the event has a rich history, including appearances by prominent figures like past First Lady Betty Ford and various contests, such as the crowning of a Miss Fish Fry and the “Most Beautiful Baby” contest. The Lions Club is aiming to strengthen the event’s footprint in the community, even with the challenges of a smaller venue compared to previous years.

Costa Mesa Mayor John Stephens is expected to attend, reflecting the city’s support for this historic gathering and other local initiatives. The Lions Club comprises fewer than two dozen active members but benefits from the dedication of numerous volunteers from local high schools, clubs, and organizations. Their efforts contribute significantly to organizing and promoting the event.

As the Fish Fry approaches, excitement builds within the community for this cherished summer event. The blend of delicious food, engaging activities, and a spirit of camaraderie promises to create a memorable experience for visitors of all ages, continuing a legacy that has become an integral part of life in Costa Mesa.
