In the sunny town of Santa Clarita, baseball fans got a delightful treat as the College of the Canyons (COC) Cougars took to the field and triumphed over Orange Coast College (OCC) with a spectacular 10-1 victory! This game, which took place on February 21 at the beloved Mike Gillespie Field, marked a significant moment for the Cougars as they broke their three-game losing streak.
With this victory, COC improved its record to 2-8, while OCC slipped to 4-8. This clash was a rematch; fans might remember that in their earlier encounter on January 29, OCC emerged with an 11-6 win. Talk about revenge being a dish best served cold!
The excitement was palpable, especially since the earlier scheduled game on February 13 had to be postponed due to some nasty weather. But with clear skies above, the Cougars wasted no time showcasing their skills. COC kicked things off with a bang when Evan Jaquez drove in Jose Mariano during the first inning, putting the Cougars on the scoreboard at 1-0.
As the game progressed, the initial excitement simmered down to a tense 1-1 tie. But it was in the sixth inning that COC began to really flex its muscles. Jung Jun Lee hit an impressive RBI double, giving the Cougars the lead at 2-1. Just when it seemed like things were starting to look up for COC, Frankie Malagon stepped up to the plate and unleashed a powerful three-run homer that soared over the field, pushing the lead to 5-1.
But the Cougars weren’t done yet! Oh no! In the seventh inning, Jaquez struck again with an RBI single, extending the lead to 6-1. The crowd erupted when Andrew Sherrell capped off the explosive performance with a grand slam in the eighth, which effectively crushed any hopes of an OCC comeback!
As stats tell the story, several players stood out during this thrilling matchup. Evan Jaquez was on fire, going 2-for-3 with two walks, two runs, and two RBIs. Not to be overlooked, Joseph Jasso, the starting pitcher for COC, had a stellar game too, pitching all nine innings and allowing just one run on four hits, along with five strikeouts and a single walk.
Malagon and Sherrell were also highlights of the evening with their home runs and brought in a total of four and three RBIs, respectively. It was a true team effort that fans won’t forget anytime soon!
