Allergan Aesthetics, part of AbbVie Inc., plans to lay off 202 employees in Irvine, California, effective July 22. This move is aimed at streamlining its workforce while enhancing training programs. Despite the layoffs, Allergan is set to open its first AMI Training Center in Irvine soon, focusing on improving skills for aesthetic providers. The transition reflects a commitment to innovation and education in the aesthetic industry.

Irvine, California – Allergan Aesthetics, a division of AbbVie Inc., has announced plans to lay off 202 employees in Irvine, California, effective July 22. This decision comes as part of the company’s strategy to enhance its training programs while transitioning to a more streamlined workforce.

Among the 202 employees impacted, 19 work on-site at the Irvine facility, with the remainder being remote workers. The layoffs were officially communicated through a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) letter dispatched to state employment officials on May 21. Positions affected include roles in sales, data engineering, and product management across various departments within Allergan Aesthetics.

Despite the upcoming layoffs, Allergan Aesthetics has ambitious plans to launch its first Allergan Medical Institute (AMI) Training Center in Irvine in June. These training centers are part of a broader initiative that includes plans to establish additional facilities in Atlanta and Austin. The centers aim to provide high-quality, customized training for licensed aesthetics providers, focusing on enhancing their skills to ensure higher levels of patient satisfaction.

Glen Curran, Senior Vice President at Allergan Aesthetics, has highlighted the objective of these centers is to expand and elevate training programs for aesthetic providers at all levels of learning. The AMI Training Centers will feature extensive, hands-on curricula developed by AMI faculty trainers to create an engaging and beneficial experience for participants. The upcoming training center in Orange County will be located at the company’s headquarters in Irvine, with an expected opening date in 2025.

The AMI program is designed to focus on improving clinical techniques, managing complications, and enhancing the business acumen of aesthetic service providers. Furthermore, the AMI Training Centers will be strategically established in more than ten locations globally, allowing for an expansive outreach of their educational offerings. Continuous learning will also be supported through the AMI Online platform, which offers a wide array of educational and training resources for aesthetics providers available 24/7.

This development reflects Allergan Aesthetics’ commitment to maintaining excellence and innovation in the education of aesthetic practices. While the layoffs may cause short-term challenges for the workforce, the establishment of the training centers illustrates a long-term vision of improving the skills and effectiveness of those working within the aesthetic industry.

Overall, this action is indicative of a shift within Allergan Aesthetics toward optimizing their workforce and aligning resources with emerging training demands as the aesthetic market evolves.
