Newport Beach witnessed several arrests over the weekend as local authorities responded to multiple incidents involving drug possession and theft. On March 22, a routine traffic stop led to the apprehension of three individuals connected to drug offenses and possession of stolen property.
An officer on patrol observed a Chevrolet Silverado traveling southbound on Jamboree Road without any license plates. Upon conducting a thorough investigation, it was revealed that the occupants of the vehicle had either active parole or probation statuses or outstanding warrants. The situation escalated when a search of the vehicle uncovered various illegal items, including methamphetamine, syringes, loose Adderall, and drug paraphernalia. Furthermore, several credit cards that did not belong to any of the occupants were found.
In addition to the drugs, the authorities retrieved a collection of laptops, tablets, checks, and two e-bikes from within the vehicle. The suspicious registration of the Silverado led to its being impounded, and all three individuals were subsequently arrested and booked into the Newport Beach Police Department jail.
Earlier in the night, two other individuals were arrested in a related incident. Newport Beach officers were alerted to a stolen vehicle report around 11:10 p.m. near West Coast Highway and Highland Street. After locating the confirmed stolen vehicle, police pursued it until it was safely pulled over. A search during the traffic stop yielded not only methamphetamine but also other illegal substances such as amphetamine pills and psilocybin mushrooms. The stolen vehicle was towed, and both suspects were taken into custody, although their identities have not been released yet.
In a separate incident, Alfredo M. Hopgood-Otero, a 28-year-old convicted robber, pleaded guilty to carjacking and leading law enforcement on a car chase. The sequence of events began when he stole a vehicle at gunpoint near Fashion Island, prompting a police pursuit. Hopgood-Otero’s initial carjacking broke down, forcing him to steal a second vehicle, a black Jeep Cherokee, to continue his escape.
After a chaotic chase, which included barricading himself in a residence, Hopgood-Otero surrendered without further incident. His guilty plea resulted in a sentence of 22 years in prison. Prior to this incident, he had served 872 days in jail for his crimes. Hopgood-Otero has a troubled history, including resolving a 2021 case that involved felony assault with a deadly weapon among other charges, alongside a previous robbery conviction that included enhancements for the use of a deadly weapon.
This series of arrests highlights ongoing issues with drug possession and theft in Newport Beach, a city that has seen significant law enforcement activity in recent months. The local police continue to monitor situations involving criminal behavior, actively addressing reports of stolen vehicles and drug-related incidents to enhance community safety.
