Newport Beach

The 58th Annual Newport Beach Art Exhibition drew approximately 2,000 attendees to the Newport Beach Civic Center on Saturday, showcasing a vibrant array of creative talent. The event featured around 240 artworks, including paintings, sculptures, photography, and mixed media, all displayed in the Community Room and Civic Green of the Civic Center.

This annual exhibition offers participating artists a unique one-day opportunity to showcase and sell their creations to the public. The event encourages local artists to gain exposure and form connections within the community, fostering a supportive environment for creative expression.

Melissa Hartson, library services director for the Newport Beach Library, highlighted the significance of the event in bringing artists and art enthusiasts together. The Newport Beach Arts Foundation Board of Directors, represented by President Arlene Greer, expressed enthusiasm about the diverse range of works displayed throughout the venue.

Among the artists featured, Marcia Totten from Placentia showcased her abstract acrylic piece titled “Iris.” Totten employs a distinctive painting technique involving pouring, hand application, and blowing air to create her artwork. Her innovative approach attracted attention for its unique textures and colors.

The awards presented during the exhibition recognized outstanding work among the participants. Elena Kealy, a self-taught artist from Rancho Santa Margarita, received the prestigious Juror’s Choice Award for her oil on canvas artwork titled “Bliss,” measuring 36 inches by 48 inches. Kealy explained that her piece represents the emotions experienced during sunset, reflecting the beauty and complexity of the clouds.

Kealy’s background is noteworthy; she was born in Russia and worked as a mechanical engineer before turning her passion for painting into a focused endeavor. With ten years of painting experience, she continues to explore her artistic abilities with great passion.

Another award-winner at the exhibition was Jeff Guzzetta, who participated for the second consecutive year. Guzzetta received the third-place award in the 3D art category for his stained glass and mosaic design created on a retired surfboard. He described feeling a deep connection to the surfboard, which inspired him with its intriguing shapes and colors.

Community Impact and Support

The Newport Beach Art Exhibition not only provides artists with a platform for exposure but also enriches the community’s cultural landscape. Local residents and visitors alike benefit from engaging with diverse artistic expressions and supporting local talents. The event fosters a sense of appreciation for the arts and encourages a greater understanding of the creative processes involved in producing various forms of artwork.

Historical Significance

The tradition of the Newport Beach Art Exhibition has continued for nearly six decades, evolving into a celebrated event for both artists and attendees. The exhibition has established itself as a cornerstone of the local arts scene, promoting creativity and encouraging participation from emerging and established artists alike. Each year, it brings together individuals who share a passion for the arts, contributing to a vibrant community atmosphere.

As the Newport Beach Art Exhibition continues to thrive, it remains essential for fostering artistic growth and appreciation within the region. The event stands as a testament to the importance of supporting local talent and providing an accessible platform for artistic expression.
