Los Angeles, California – A historic heat wave sweeping through Southern California has led to the rescue of over two dozen individuals suffering from heat-related illnesses on Saturday. Temperatures soared in various parts of the region, with some areas reaching the high 90s, prompting emergency services to respond to multiple incidents.

In Orange County alone, authorities rescued at least 15 people due to heat-related issues throughout the day. A significant rescue operation involved a group of 11 individuals who were found in distress along a trail in unincorporated Newport Coast. Among this group, two individuals were transported to a local hospital, while five others were evaluated but chose not to receive further assistance. Four of the group members were reported to be experiencing heat exhaustion.

Additionally, four hikers were rescued from Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park amid peak temperatures of 96 degrees Fahrenheit. Three were treated for heat-related issues, with one needing to be airlifted to safety. In Anaheim, a woman suffering from the intense heat was rescued near the busy 91 Freeway. Firefighters also assisted a woman in distress at Crystal Cove State Park in Newport Beach, though the specifics of her condition remained unclear.

Moving to Riverside County, emergency responders rescued nine individuals facing heat-related challenges in different areas, including Temecula, Palm Desert, Jurupa Valley, Moreno Valley, La Quinta, and Lake Elsinore. A dehydrated hiker was airlifted from Big Bear Canyon Loop and Ortega Highway, where temperatures peaked at 99 degrees. In Los Angeles, a 55-year-old woman suffering from heat exhaustion was rescued from the Hollywood Hills near the Cahuenga Peak trail and subsequently transported to a local hospital for further medical attention.

A heat advisory was issued for several regions, including Santa Clarita Valley, Santa Monica Mountains, Calabasas, Agoura Hills, San Fernando Valley, and San Gabriel Valley, with forecasters cautioning that sensitive populations could face increased health risks due to the extreme temperatures. Individuals in the affected areas were advised to drink plenty of fluids, stay indoors in air-conditioned environments, avoid direct sunlight, and check on vulnerable neighbors.

Record-breaking temperatures were documented across the area. Woodland Hills reached a sweltering 100 degrees, surpassing the previous record of 99 set in 1988. Downtown Los Angeles recorded 99 degrees, breaking the old record of 95 established in 1934. Long Beach experienced a high of 95 degrees, exceeding the previous record of 90 from 1960, while Burbank hit 101 degrees, topping the former record of 95 originally set in 1981.

As the weekend progressed, officials remained vigilant about the potential for heat-related illness, noting individual cases of heat exhaustion and other critical medical situations across the region. Local health officials emphasized the importance of staying hydrated and taking necessary precautions during the severe heat wave.

Forecasts indicate a relief from the extreme temperatures may be on the horizon, with expected cooling starting Sunday and “May gray” skies anticipated early next week.
