Costa Mesa – Orange Coast College (OCC) students gathered at the Student Union on April 30, 2025, for an engaging Open Mic Night, showcasing a variety of talents from singing to instrumental performances. The event highlighted the creativity and artistic expression of students, offering them an opportunity to perform in front of peers while fostering community spirit on campus.

Students served snacks and drinks prior to the performances, creating a relaxed atmosphere for the audience. The Open Mic Night featured a total of 11 unique acts, which included solo performances, group collaborations, and a mix of genres. Notable performers included Jordan Davis, an OCC economics major, who delivered a rendition of “Incinerate” by Sonic Youth on the guitar. Ellie Arthur also captivated the audience with her piano skills and vocal performance.

Musical duos and groups further enriched the event, such as Mo Mendoza on piano and Jake Pitcher on guitar. Additionally, a talented group of music majors collaborated to perform “Lean on Me” by Bill Withers, incorporating various instruments and vocal styles. The ensemble featured Jake Pitcher on guitar, Phuong Trinh on flute, Mo Mendoza on piano, with James Pham contributing as a backup singer and beatboxer.

The audience actively engaged with the performers, showing enthusiasm by clapping, holding up flashlights, and even singing along with some of the acts. This interaction created a lively and supportive environment that encouraged the performers to express themselves freely and confidently.

Davan Luu, a member of the College Life Committee, stated that the event was designed to let performers showcase their talents and emphasized the growing spirit among the student body as they bond throughout the academic year. By participating in events like the Open Mic Night, students were able to forge new connections and strengthen existing friendships. The atmosphere was seen as a significant factor in allowing students to come together as a unified group.

Phuong Trinh shared insights into the spontaneous nature of their group performance, indicating that they formed their musical collaboration just prior to the event. This last-minute arrangement reflects the flexibility and willingness of students to step outside their comfort zones. Jake Pitcher also noted the importance of performing with friends, as it helps them build confidence and prepare for their turns on stage. Such teamwork not only enhances individual performance but also strengthens bonds amongst the participants.

Jordan Davis, who had previously aimed to perform his song at earlier Open Mic Nights, expressed that his goal this time was to perfect his rendition. This determination highlights the commitment of performers to improve their craft and share their progress with the audience. Each performer at the event contributed not only their talent but also their personal journey in the realm of musical expression.

Overall, the Open Mic Night served as more than just an entertainment event; it played a crucial role in fostering a sense of community among students at OCC. By providing a platform for artistic expression, students were able to connect with one another through shared experiences and appreciation of each other’s talents. The event has been seen as a successful step towards encouraging more artistic endeavors on campus and nurturing a vibrant student culture.
